FAQ - Driving in Germany
Am I allowed to drive in Germany without a German driver's license? Do I need a German driver's license to rent a car?
No - it is not necessary to have a German driver's license to either rent a car or drive in Germany if you possess a valid driver's license from your home country. A valid license from another EU state is always valid in Germany; if you are from a non-EU country, your current license may be used in Germany for six months.
That said, it may be advisable to obtain an international driver's license as a supplement to your other license; that's a question to ask your rental car company.
