Bonn International School

Bonn International School (BIS) was founded in 1997 as an independent, non-profit, co-educational English language school.

BIS is located on a green, secure site in a residential area of Bonn, a city of 330,000 inhabitants. The City of Bonn is a hub of international commerce and scientific research and a university town. For a city of this size, Bonn has a remarkable number of museums, theaters, cultural events, sports and efficient public transportation. Bonn is within short distance of three international airports and connected to major European capitals and historical sites via the famous German Autobahn and train systems.

Currently there are approximately 790 students from 75 different countries in our school. Our youngest students enter BIS at age 3 via Early Learning; our oldest students graduate from the Diploma Program at age 18. The maximum class size is 22 students. The average class size is 18 students. The student:teacher ratio is ca. 9:1 in the Primary School and 8:1 in the Secondary Schools.

BIS is an International Baccalaureate World School certified to teach Primary Years (PYP), Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma (DYP) Programmes. Full accreditation has been granted to BIS by the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Our school is regularly evaluated and accredited every 5 years by each of these organizations.

The BIS campus is housed in two buildings, each with its own personality and distinguishing architecture.

The Primary School is in the modern and colourful "Waves" building. Opened in January 2007 it contains:

  • Primary Classrooms
  • Cafeteria
  • Media Centre
  • Science and technology labs
  • Sports hall
  • Apple computer labs

BIS is in the midst of expanding the "Waves" building to double the cafeteria and add an additional 23 classrooms, study rooms and exam spaces. This addition will be complete in December 2016.

The heart of the Secondary School is in the "Agora", a building named for its interior atrium and opened in August 2012. It has:

  • Secondary classrooms
  • A double sports hall appropriate for competitive sports
  • Sound-proofed music and drama rooms
  • Kiosk for snacks and light food

The BIS campus also includes spacious age-appropriate playgrounds, playing fields and beautiful green spaces. The school is located next to the Rhine River and at the southern tip of Bonn's largest recreational park.

BIS offers a full range of Extracurricular Activities taking place at lunch or after school. Some of these activities include international travel. Some of our offerings are:

  • After-school care for children up to Grade 4
  • Competitive and recreational sports
  • Dance, drama, vocal and instrumental music and musical theatre
  • TedX, Student Council, Model United Nations
  • Mathematics teams, environmental clubs
  • Homework club, computer clubs and more

School publications include the fortnightly Newsflash, bi-annual "Waves" magazine and the BIS Yearbook.

BIS also considers itself a home away from home for parents and offers a number of courses, activities and services to its parent community, including a Welcome Family Committee, social events, English classes and information for moving to and understanding Germany.
