Frankfurt Airport – Germany’s Gateway to the World

In 1936, the Flug- und Luftschiffhafen Rhein-Main (Air and Airship Port Rhine-Main) – the core of today’s Frankfurt Airport (airport code = FRA) – was inaugurated adjacent to the Frankfurter Kreuz autobahn intersection. 2011 is a milestone year for Fraport as we mark the 75th anniversary of Frankfurt Airport at this strategic location in the heart of Germany and the European Union. Furthermore, we will be inaugurating the new Runway Northwest, which will incrementally increase the overall slot capacity at FRA by more than 50 percent in the future. Fraport AG (formerly Flughafen Frankfurt/Main AG) -- the owner and manager of Frankfurt Airport -- boasts a long tradition as an airport manager. Founded in 1924 under the name Südwestdeutsche Luftverkehrs AG, the company initially operated Frankfurt Airport at the Rebstock airfield.

Today, FRA with its four runways, two passenger terminals, aeronautical facilities, as well as CargoCity South and the Mönchhof logistics park now covers a total area of 21 square kilometers. Fraport provides various facilities and infrastructure to airlines and other users, as well as to a large number of agencies and airport concessionaires – more than 500 businesses and organizations in all. About 70,000 employees make Frankfurt Airport Germany’s biggest employment complex at a single location.

Fraport offers a wide range of high-quality airport services that ensure the smooth flow of flight operations and give FRA a international edge over its competitors. In addition to airfreight and passenger transportation, Fraport provides aircraft handling and apron management, and retail and real estate management.

The Frankfurt Airport company manages the world’s largest baggage conveyor system and the Sky Line people-mover – two key infrastructure elements which help ensure the quick transfer of passengers and their baggage at FRA. No wonder, Frankfurt Airport has the highest transfer rate of any airport in Europe – more than 50 percent or every second passenger is connecting at FRA. Frankfurt is renowned for its passenger-friendly connecting times and its extensive choice of more than 110 scheduled airlines flying to some 300 destinations in over 110 countries. FRA is global home base of Lufthansa and the main European hub of the Star Alliance.  The growing fleet of Lufthansa A380 superjumbos is based at Frankfurt, too. The A380 destinations to the U.S.A. are San Francisco, Miami and JFK in New York.

Welcoming more than 53 million passengers in 2010, FRA achieved a 4.1 percent increase in passenger traffic year-on-year. Airfreight tonnage climbed by 21.5 percent to more than 2.2 million metric tons. A global Top 10 airport, FRA ranks as the ninth busiest for total passengers (fourth for international passengers) and eighth for total cargo tonnage (seventh for international freight). FRA ranks third in Europe (after London-Heathrow and Paris) for passengers and second in terms of cargo (after Paris). Each day, an average of 1,350 flights takeoff and land at Frankfurt Airport.

Fraport expertise gained over many decades at the Frankfurt air transportation hub is in strong demand around the globe. Through investments and management contracts, Fraport is now running airports from Europe to Africa and the Middle East, Asia and South America.

With total revenue of €2.2 billion in 2010, the Fraport Group achieved EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) of €710.6 million and profit of €271.5 million. The company successfully launched Germany’s first airport privatization in 2001 and is traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Fraport is the only airport company in the world to have earned listings on all of the major sustainability indexes: the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), STOXX/Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), and FTSE4Good Index. A world leader in airport environmental management and green initiatives, Frankfurt Airport was the first airport in Europe to meet the requirements of Europe’s voluntary Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program in 2009 and is now accredited at the ”reduction” level of this multi-stage program.
