International School Augsburg

A challenging education in a caring place next door to Munich, Bavaria

While the International School Augsburg is readily accessible from the Stuttgart-Munich Autobahn 8, ISA’s actual site is in Gersthofen. This charming, small town lies just outside of the historical city of Augsburg City, which is Bavaria’s third largest metropolis, some 50 minutes northwest of Munich.

During its initial six years, IS Augsburg has grown rapidly. It now boasts more than 300 students, but when it first opened in September 2005 the enrollment was only 75 pupils.

ISA offers full-day English-language education to children from Augsburg’s growing international community as well as to local German students.

School hours for the Early Learning Centre (ELC) run from 9:00 am to 3:15 pm on Monday through Thursday and from 9:00 am to 1:45 pm on Fridays. Grades 1 – 5 hours are from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm on Monday through Thursday and from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Fridays. From Grade 6 upwards school starts a bit earlier. Hours are from 8:50 am to 3:30 pm on Monday through Thursday and from 8:50 am to 2:00 pm on Fridays. Extracurricular offerings through the After School Activity Programme (ASAP) take place between 3:40 pm and 4:40 pm most days of the week.

ISA is truly international in scope. Its students and their families representing 25 nationalities while its highly qualified 46 teachers come from 18 different countries.

The lower school (ELC to grade 5) is authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) and the high school offers the International Certificate of General Secondary Education (IGCSE) in grade 10 and the IB Diploma in grade 12.

Faculty and staff at ISA are very proud of their first upcoming class of IB Diplomates who will graduate in the summer in 2012.

ISA strongly encourages and supports all Upper School students who possess the necessary aptitude and motivation to complete the requirements of the IB Diploma Program in Grades 11-12 – a challenging program that is an important step for University admission.

By maintaining smaller classrooms with a Lower School maximum class size of only 16 pupils in the Early Learning Centre (ages 4 and 5,) and of just 18 in grades 1 to 12, each student is guaranteed individual attention. This is important and differentiates ISA from many other schools. Senior level classes often take place in even smaller groups. The average upper level class size is currently just 15 individuals.

While ISA takes traditional academics very seriously, it is equally committed to offering classes in drama, art, music as well as physical education. There are excellent sports programs and musical training. In particular, the in-school instrumental program is a big attraction and a there is a well-trained student orchestra.

The physical plant at International School Augsburg is truly exceptional, too. The main building is bright and spacious with large classrooms. It also houses the library, science rooms and music and art rooms. A recently added wing houses additional classrooms, the cafeteria and a sports hall.

Visitors to ISA regularly comment on its exceptionally friendly atmosphere, the respectful and confident attitude of the students and the calm, focused learning environment.
