International School of Stuttgart

The International School of Stuttgart e.V. (ISS) offers an education to students between the ages of 3 and 18 years. ISS is a private, non-profit institution (Verein or Association) which was founded in 1985 to serve the needs of the local international community. It is governed by a Board of Trustees elected by parents, who are automatically members of the Verein. The school is accredited by the International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is recognised by the local state of Baden-Württemberg. ISS is also recognised as a MINT Freundliche Schule (STEM-friendly school) and Digitale Schule (digital school). ISS is renowned in Germany for taking this further with its STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) initiative with including Arts.

The school has two campuses, in Degerloch, a suburb on the southwestern edge of Stuttgart and in Sindelfingen. Both campuses are accessible by public transport and by road from the town centers or from the autobahn system surrounding Stuttgart.

The 830 strong ISS student body is truly multicultural, with students from approximately 45 different nations. The faculty is similarly diversified, with qualified professionals representing 34 nationalities. All teachers have at least a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) and/or a home country teaching certificate. Many also have advanced degrees. Although the language of instruction is English, the German language is taught throughout the school and students for whom English is an additional language receive special attention in small groups and within the classroom.

ISS is the only school in the greater Stuttgart area to offer an international education for globally mobile families, approved and accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization, the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

To better serve the wider region, from Heilbronn to Tübingen/Reutlingen and from Pforzheim to Schwäbisch Gmünd, we operate two campuses. The International School of Stuttgart is comprised of two campuses with a shared Vision, Mission and Philosophy, aligned programs and quality staffing but are differentiated to retain the spirit and history of both locations.

The Degerloch campus occupies three modern purpose built buildings. The Upper School was opened in 1998 and the Lower School was opened in September 2001, together with a gymnasium and outdoor sports facilities. A new building with a second gym and Middle School classrooms was opened in fall, 2012. Classrooms are large, bright, and excellently resourced. The accommodation currently houses classrooms for five Pre-School classes and grades 1 through 12, together with numerous language rooms for German, French, Spanish and English as a Second Language.

Science and Technology are catered for in five state-of-the-art science labs, a technology makerspace and a learning commons that provides library access throughout all public/collaborative spaces in the school. The Lower School has its own learning commons as well and is in the midst of repurposing and building a new makerspace facility. The Arts and Design are provided for with dedicated rooms for music, visual art, design/technology and a multi-purpose auditorium. The outdoor play areas are spacious and green and ISS regularly collaborates with local sports teams and utilizes excellent local facilities to augment our own resources.

The Sindelfingen Campus is situated about 20 km from the Degerloch campus and is housed in a modern former bank building, easily accessible by public transport and from the motorway system. The campus caters for students in Kindergarten through grade 10. Beyond grade 10, students transfer to the Degerloch campus for the ISS and International Baccalaureate Diploma Years. Classrooms are bright and airy and students have the use of a library, a cafeteria area, art and science facilities and a central meeting/assembly space known as “Treffpunkt Lernen” (Meeting Point Learning). Continued collaboration with the Böblingen Sport Verein highlights the school’s close connections with the local community, which augments the interlingual approach.
