Jacobs University – Germany’s premier English-language Campus
Jacobs University is one of Germany’s only institutions to offer bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees completely taught in English, with a focus in the sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Jacobs teaches a broad range of academic subjects, from integrated cultural studies to astrophysics, geosciences and electrical engineering. Nearly 700 undergraduate students can major in one of 20 programs (See: http://www.jacobs-university.de/academics/) Another 500 students pursue graduate programs often in collaboration with research centers such as the Max Planck Institute or Alfried Wegener Institute. With over 120 professors, Jacobs University boasts one of the most favorable professor:student ratios in the country (1:10). A number of the academic programs have also been recently ranked as some of the best in Germany, particularly for the level of support for students (see the latest CHE rankings). As Jacobs University continues to develop its reputation for excellent academic preparation, its alumni are increasingly joining top graduate programs and international firms world-wide, particularly in Germany, the US and the UK (http://www.jacobs-university.de/csc/).
Modeled after Rice University in Houston, Jacobs not only offers an American-styled liberal arts curriculum, however, its admissions process and academic calendar are also US-based. Jacobs is a great option for students who have a connection to Germany, who might be interested in pursuing a degree in Europe but who would prefer to study with English as the medium of instruction. Opened in 2001, the 70-acre campus resembles a small, American liberal arts college and offers excellent facilities, much of which has been renovated in the last 10 years. Living and learning together in an international environment is one of the main reasons students are attracted to Jacobs from over 100 nations. The university is located in Bremen-Nord and it offers four on-campus dormitories managed by college masters from the faculty. Each undergraduate student receives a single bedroom, sharing a suite with a student from a different country. A number of clubs and sports – ranging from rowing and rugby teams to theater and music performance clubs – allow students to balance the academic workload with community activities. The local student transport pass makes it easy for students to travel around the northwestern part of Germany (e.g. Hamburg, Hannover, Cuxhaven), making it possible to explore the region. Bremen’s airport also offers flights to a number of European cities such as Barcelona, Paris, London and more.
For students and families interested in studying at Jacobs, the Admissions Office is happy to provide more information or arrange for a campus tour. In addition, two Open House events are offered each year, usually in September and in April. To learn more, just contact the admissions office by writing to: admission@jacobs-university.de
