Wiesbaden - a Jewel of the Rhine-Main Region
A famous past, architectural attractiveness with the charm of the "Belle Époque" era, cultural diversity, proximity to the Rheingau and the Taunus regions make for a successful symbiosis of traditionalism and modernism in the Hessian capital.
During its 2000-year-old history, two epochs have made Wiesbaden the multifaceted city that it is today. The rapid rise of the sleepy provincial town into a highly fashionable world spa occurred during the 19th century. Until World War I, Wiesbaden, with its hot springs, its mild climate and its casino, was a magnet drawing the crowned heads and monied aristocrats from all over Europe. After decades of crises, the city once again experienced an unexpected ascent as of 1945. This former spa city in the heart of Germany has grown steadily since then and has been able to expand its profile.
With its 26 hot springs, Wiesbaden is an established venue for good health. A visit to the "Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme" is an extraordinary experience. The thermae offers a sauna area covering 1.450 square meters on the site of an old Roman bath. With 7 different saunas, a large thermal bath area and many massage treatments the "Thermalbad Aukammtal" (thermal bath) offers relaxation and recuperation as well.
Culture is to be found in many expected and unexpected places in Wiesbaden. A colourful series of regular events appear in the Wiesbaden's event calendar. People of all ages will find something to suit their tastes and styles among classic events, such as the International May Theatre Festival or the traditional International Horse Show at Whitsun in the Biebrich palace park. In Wiesbaden, people really know how to have a good time, especially in the summer. Major street festivals, such as the "Theatrium" or the "Taunusstraßenfest" are just as popular as the numerous neighbourhood street festivals in the suburbs, or the major wine-related event, the "Rheingauer Weinwoche".
Thanks to ideal conditions for growing wine Wiesbaden's wine can look back on a history of more than 1.000 years. With every new vintage, the winegrowers fill exquisite Riesling wines, full bodied "Spätburgunder" and the vintners' own sparkling wine into the bottles of the Wine City of Wiesbaden.
