FAQ - Language Training

I'm curious about language schools in Germany. What sorts of schools are there? Are there any government-run public programs that offer discounted German classes?

There are several different approaches to learning the German language and they vary wildly in price. The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany's official cultural institute (www.goethe.de) and they offer German instruction at 13 different institutions around the country.

Private language schools, such as Inlingua, Eurolingua or Berlitz, also offer a variety of courses.

Another option are the Deutsch als Fremdsprache (German as a foreign language) classes which are offered through the Volkshochschulen (similar to North American community colleges or British polytechnical colleges). These schools are centered in the major towns and cities but offer classes in almost every small village surrounding the Kreisstadt. Obviously, the larger your village, the more classes will be offered; however, you should have to drive no more than 15-20 minutes to find a village that will have a class. A fairly complete listing of Volkshochschulen by location can be found at www.vhs.de. It doesn't have course listings for each school but it does list phone numbers you can contact.

Also, HowToGermany.com has a more extensive article about "Language Schools".
