International School Hannover Region
Educating World Citizens
Our mission at International School Hannover Region (ISHR) is to deliver a "high-quality, international education within a creative and caring environment to enable students to become life-long learners and open-minded, compassionate citizens." How do we achieve this? We are one of a small number of schools in the world to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) to all students, from our three-year-old kindergarten program through Grade 12. The IB's rigorous academic curricula, based on the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes, not only prepares our students for success at universities worldwide, but also promotes inquiry based learning, critical thinking and international respect and understanding within a caring, nurturing and safe environment. We value the student as an individual and are committed to preparing young people for a life as responsible citizens and life-long learners.
We are a language rich school with 100% immersion in English from our Kindergarten program through Grade 12, and German lessons beginning in Grade 1. Other languages are added in Secondary School (Grade 6-Grade 12). With over 70 nationalities represented, our community is linguistically and culturally rich; we sincerely believe that learning within an environment like this promotes empathy, open mindedness and respect for others, and enables our students to make a difference and create a better, more peaceful and sustainable future.
We have over 600 students enrolled with relatively small class sizes. Students who are not fluent in English are provided with special ESL (English as a Second Language) classes until they are comfortable in reading and writing the language. The school also employs trained Learning Support teachers to support the individualized learning needs some students may have, as well as full-time School Counsellors.
Our students are developing skills that lead to the design of innovative solutions not only because they will have better college outcomes and employability in the future, but because of the very real need for humans to develop ways to solve environmental and societal problems that make the world a better place. Our humanities contextualize those problems. The arts subjects nurture the creativity, risk-taking, confidence and collaboration skills to capitalize on teamwork in solving them, and our Science, Design, Technology and Math programs allow for the development of those solutions into real world change.
Located in the centre of Hanover along the beautiful Maschsee lake, the school occupies purpose-built quarters on a spacious, green campus which includes the main school administration building, five wings of classrooms, a vibrant library, sports facilities, music and drama rooms and an auditorium, a playing field, science laboratories, an excellent ICT infrastructure, Kindergarten facilities, as well as a large, attractive dining room equipped with a professional kitchen.
The school is easy to reach both by public transport and by car. The tram stops are only a short distance away, with trams and buses running at regular intervals.
The school employs over 100 faculty with a variety of national backgrounds, most of whom are full-time. The majority of faculty are native English speakers with previous experience in national and/or international schools.
In the belief that the quality of the school is directly related to the quality of the faculty, ISHR strives to engage and nurture energetic, talented, and empathetic teachers whose primary aim is the success of young people.
The Status of the School
The International School Hannover Region is organized in the form of a non-profit private limited company and therefore the management can concentrate on creating the best possible learning and teaching environment without the pressures of any shareholders' interests.
ISHR is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and belongs to the Association of German International Schools (AGIS). It is the only International School in Lower Saxony authorized to teach all three IB (International Baccalaureate) programmes, The PYP, the MYP and the IB Diploma.
ISHR has the status of a recognized "Ergänzungsschule". The school receives financial assistance from the Land of Lower Saxony and from the City of Hanover. School fees are charged but, on account of the financial help mentioned above, the fees are low in comparison with many other international schools.
